Foot Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient form of healing that has been practiced for thousands of years. It was first recorded as a healing paradigm within the Egyptian culture in 2300 BC. In Reflexology it is believed that there are connections or reflexes from specific parts of the body (for instance, the ear, hand or foot) to the remainder of the body. By treating these specific body parts alone, you have the ability to treat the entire body.

Modern Reflexology was developed in the United States during the early 1900’s by Dr William Fitzgerald - an ear, nose and throat specialist and later by physiotherapist Eunice Ingham. Both practitioners believed in the principle of there being a connection or reflex between body parts, and they developed treatment techniques and the “body map” of the foot. These principles were named “Zone Therapy” or Reflexology. Furthermore correlations have been shown between their “Zone Therapy” principles and the principles of meridians and qi flow in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

At Therapy Masters we specialise in Foot Reflexology where each part of the foot correlates with another body part (e.g. head, stomach, upper back) and all major organs (e.g. heart, lungs, spleen etc). Amanda Ferguson, our Reflexology practitioner will palpate and press through the sole of the foot to discover any tender or sore points. These tender points will often correlate to problems within other areas of the body (e.g. been sick with an upset stomach then the middle of the foot may be sore; had a cough or breathing difficulties then the ball of the foot may have tender spots).

Once this assessment is complete, it is followed by an oil foot massage, where the practitioner pays close attention to the points on the feet that were found to be tender. The principle of Reflexology is simple and holistic; just by providing treatment to the foot, you are in turn treating the entire body. By working these points the practitioner will be able to help restore the body to balance.

It is thought that Reflexology works by altering the sensations and communications of nerve endings from the foot to the organ or body part at the other end of that particular “reflex” or "zone". Massage therapy works in a different way, by effecting the muscles and soft tissue of the body, and does not directly effect nerve endings.
