Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is a gentle form of massage that involves a range of light manual techniques that aid the removal of excess fluid from the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is made up of the bone marrow, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes and a network of thin tubes or vessels that carry lymph fluid and white blood cells around the body. The network of vessels are similar to the circulatory system and in both systems there is contact with each cell in the body.

Unlike the circulatory system whose vessels are deeply imbedded in the soft tissue, lymph vessels can be found superficially, just below the skin. Furthermore the lymphatic system doesn’t contain its own pump (i.e. a heart), and must rely on the movement of the body to aid lymph flow. Lymph flow is achieved by such things as breathing, movement of blood flow in neighbouring vessels, gravity, normal body movement and muscle contraction. It are these movements that are mimicked during a lymphatic drainage treatment that results in improved lymphatic flow.

The role of the lymphatic system is twofold – to send out white blood cells throughout the body to fight infection, and to drain away excess extracellular fluid. Unfortunately the lymphatic system can be involved in the distribution of cancer cells when they spread (metastasize) throughout the body. This can result in the removal of lymph vessels &/or lymph nodes during surgical intervention for cancer. This is often the case for breast cancer patients, and they go on to experience painful, swollen arms and hands post surgery. This is due to the resulting lymphoedema or swelling that is caused, as the lymph fluid pools in the extremities. The exit tunnel that the lymph would normally have flowed along has been lost when the "infected" part of the lymph network was surgicially removed.

Lymphatic Drainage and Lymph Bandaging aims to assist in the removal of excess fluid and waste products from the lymphatic vessels as well as redistribute white blood cells throughout the body to improve infection control and immunity.

Lymphatic Drainage may:

  • Reduce swelling and/or inflammation thereby reducing symptoms of pain;
  • Reduce the symptoms of lymphoedema;

  • Aid recovery from surgery or trauma;
